APA Eighth grader clinches Gold Medal at I-SWEEEP, the world's largest science fair of its kind |

Faiza Tayyab, an eighth grade student at Austin Peace Academy, competed at the 2009 International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, and Environment) Project Olympiad, held in Houston, TX . I-SWEEEP is the largest science fair event of its kind world-wide. The competition drew nearly a thousand entries from 52- countries and 41 US states in the areas of energy, environment, and engineering from students in grades 6-12. The projects were judged by officials from universities such as UT Austin, Texas A&M, University of Houston, Rice, as well as scientists and engineers in various fields.
Faiza Tayyab won a Gold Medal in the Junior Engineering category for her project on the physics, material science, engineering, and economics of sound proofing. She received a $500 cash prize also. In addition to the Gold Medal, Faiza also received the competition’s only Grand Award for best project overall in the Junior Engineering Division.
Before qualifying for I-SWEEEP, Faiza took first place at the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair and then advanced to the 2009 Exxon Mobil Texas State Science and Engineering Competition. There, she was the only student to win the American Society of Materials Science Outstanding Project Award. She was also one of four junior students in the state of Texas to win the US Navy Research Award.
