National Association of Elementary School Principals has created PresidentХs Education Awards Program (PEAP) to help principals recognize and honor those students who have achieved high academic goals through their hard work and dedication to learning. A certificate of recognition is granted with a special pin to nominees.

There are two types of awards:
  • President's Award for Educational Excellence (PAEE)
  • President's Award for Educational Achievement (PAEA)
The following criteria must be applied for the PAEE:
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) of nominee should be at least 90 %, or 3.5 out of 4 point scale
  • School criteria are used to assess special skill the student might have
  • State Achievement Tests scores
  • National Achievement Tests scores
  • Class teacher recommendation
  • Another staff/teacher recommendation
The following criteria must be applied for the PAEA:
  • Student shows tremendous growth but not enough to earn (PAEE).
  • Demonstrate commitment to learning despite obstacles.
  • Maintain records to qualify student for (PAEE) but illness, personal crisis, or special needs prevented student from reaching that award.

The school principal has the final authority to determine which students receive any of the awards, based on the above criteria.

14 National Young Scholar Awards in 2006-07

Fourteen (14) APA students from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades were selected for the 2007 National Young Scholars Program (NYSP). They were invited to attend the NYSP camp in Texas this summer. Parents of the NYSP awardees have their choice to make arrangements for their children to attend the NYSP program.

The National Young Scholars Program (NYSP) was created to identify young scholars with a history of academic achievement and exceptional leadership potential at their young age Р outstanding individuals representing a variety of backgrounds and possessing a broad range of interests and goals to stimulate and invigorate their natural curiosity to learn and discover. The program attracts the most mature and independent individuals possible within the age group and nominations are extended to high-achieving scholars who have demonstrated these abilities.

The National Young Scholars Program is sponsored by the National Center for Early Academic Excellence (NCEAE), an independent educational organization dedicated to the early identification, motivation, and inspiration of AmericaХs most promising elementary school students. NYSP is based in Washington/Virginia.
